What to Expect on the I-35 Corridor (Joshua to AUS)
The 187-mile drive from Joshua to Austin-Bergstrom is straight south on I-35W and I-35. There are no toll roads required, no transfers, and only a handful of practical pinch points to plan around:
- Joshua, Burleson, and Alvarado (first 20 miles): I-35W south of the Joshua exits is mostly free-flowing except at weekday rush hour (4:00-6:30 PM), when southbound traffic out of Fort Worth backs up around the 9th Street and TX-174 exits in Burleson. Mornings are clear.
- Hillsboro (the I-35E/W merge): About 45 miles in, I-35W and I-35E rejoin into one I-35. The merge itself is a normal interchange, but the Hillsboro outlet area is a common gas + bathroom stop and adds 5-10 minutes if you stop. We don't stop unless you ask.
- Waco and Temple (the long middle): Roughly miles 65 through 125. Speed limit is 75 MPH and the road is usually wide-open. The biggest weekday surprise is the Waco construction zone near 12th Street — a multi-year widening project — and we plan around live traffic data because the lane closures shift weekly.
- Salado and Belton (rest-stop sweet spot): If you're traveling with kids or want one short stretch, miles 130-145 have the cleanest gas/restroom options on the route (Buc-ee's at Salado is the obvious choice and adds about 10 minutes).
- Georgetown and Round Rock (the Austin metro entry): Miles 160-175. This is where almost all of the drive's variability comes from. Inbound traffic to Austin slows sharply weekdays from 7:00-9:30 AM and 3:30-7:00 PM, and during big Austin event weekends (SXSW in March, ACL in October, F1 in November, UT home football Saturdays). We add a 30-45 minute pad for any pickup that lands you on I-35 between Round Rock and Austin during those windows.
- Final approach to AUS via TX-71 East: Most drivers exit I-35 onto TX-71 East at the US-290 split south of downtown rather than fighting through central Austin. TX-71 drops you at the AUS terminal entrance with no surface streets.
Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) Curbside: What Happens When You Arrive
AUS has a single-level departures roadway in front of the Barbara Jordan Terminal with airline-specific zones. Your driver knows the zone for your airline — American and Southwest at the south end, United, Delta and JetBlue toward the middle, Spirit, Frontier and Alaska toward the north end. We pull up curbside, your driver gets your bags out of the back, and you walk roughly 30 feet to the door of your terminal. No garage walk, no shuttle from a remote lot, no rental-car-style transfer.
