The standard path is US-290 East through Stonewall, Johnson City, and Dripping Springs, then SH-71 East to the airport entrance on Presidential Boulevard. Fredericksburg and Austin are both on Central Time, so there is no time-zone math to build into your departure plan.

That is the simple version. The useful version involves knowing which route to take at which hour, how much buffer to build in before a flight, where the drop-off actually is at the Barbara Jordan Terminal, and whether a shuttle makes more sense than leaving your vehicle in airport parking for a week. Below is everything you need to plan the trip with confidence.

Route Options from Fredericksburg to Austin-Bergstrom

There are three practical ways to get from Fredericksburg to AUS. All of them are estimates — actual distance and drive time shift with construction, weather, and Hill Country weekend traffic.

Route 1: US-290 East through Johnson City and Dripping Springs (Primary)

This is the route most Fredericksburg residents and shuttle drivers use. Leave town on Main Street, which carries US-290 through Fredericksburg, and head east. You will pass through Stonewall — home to the LBJ State Park and Historic Site — then Hye, then Johnson City, where US-290 intersects US-281. Continue east through the Pedernales River valley toward Dripping Springs, often called the Gateway to the Hill Country, and on into southwest Austin, where US-290 meets SH-71 at the interchange locals call "the Y" in Oak Hill. Take SH-71 East (Ben White Boulevard) and follow it southeast past I-35 and US-183 to the Presidential Boulevard exit for the airport.

Route 2: SH-16 North and SH-71 East through Llano and Marble Falls (Scenic Alternate)

If you are leaving from the north side of Fredericksburg or simply want a prettier drive, take SH-16 north toward Llano, then pick up SH-71 East. That route runs through Kingsland, Marble Falls, and Bee Cave before dropping into Austin from the west. It is longer than US-290 and not the choice for a tight flight window, but it avoids the Dripping Springs and Oak Hill congestion that builds on weekday afternoons and during events. Lake views and granite hills are a bonus.

Route 3: US-290 East to I-35 (Only If You Need Downtown Austin)

Some travelers combine the airport run with a stop downtown. In that case, US-290 East into Austin and then I-35 South toward SH-71 East is workable, but I-35 through central Austin is the least predictable piece of the whole trip. If your flight leaves in the morning, skip downtown and take Route 1 directly.
