Houston has two commercial airports, and picking the wrong one can add an hour to your trip. George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) sits about 20 miles north of downtown; William P. Hobby (HOU) sits about 7 miles south of it. They serve different airlines, different sides of the metro and, at certain hours, very different ground-transportation realities. The Two Airports at a Glance
- IAH (George Bush Intercontinental): five terminals (A, B, C, D and E), the largest international operation in Houston, and a major hub for United Airlines. Terminals D and E handle most international arrivals with the Mickey Leland international facilities. The Skyway and Subway trains connect the terminals.
- HOU (William P. Hobby): a single terminal with two concourses, dominated by Southwest Airlines, with a smaller international presence. One building means short walks and simple pickups.
Which Airport Should You Choose?
- Choose IAH if you are flying United, connecting internationally, or living or staying in north Houston, The Woodlands, Spring, Humble or Kingwood. Spring to IAH and Humble to IAH are short, easy runs from our perspective.
- Choose Hobby if you are flying Southwest, heading to the southeast side of Houston, or connecting to the coast. Hobby is the natural gateway toward Galveston: Houston to Galveston cruise transfers run from either airport, but Hobby is closer.

How Pickups Work at Each Airport

Both airports receive late flights: IAH runs international banks that land near or after midnight, and Hobby takes West Coast and Latin America red-eyes into the late evening. Timing After You Land
Domestic arrivals: we normally schedule pickup 30 minutes after landing, or 15 minutes if you have no checked bags. International arrivals at IAH: 45 minutes after landing to cover customs and baggage. Baggage, Curbs and Common Houston Mistakes
- At IAH, don't guess your terminal from the airline's name alone. Regional and codeshare flights often use a different terminal than the mainline carrier; the flight number is the reliable key, and it is what we track.
- International arrivals exit at Terminals D/E. If your party waits at Terminal A, they will wait a long time. Meet international travelers at the D/E arrivals area, or let the driver set the meeting point.
- At Hobby, the two concourses share one baggage hall, so there is no risk of waiting at the wrong carousel area - just agree on a door.
- Rush hour shapes everything. The IAH-to-downtown run can double in length between 7 and 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m.; Hobby has the same pattern toward the southwest side. Quote with the real pickup hour.
