The trip from S to A is approximately 142 miles as the crow flies, but the actual road route runs about 165 to 175 miles via US-96 South to US-59 / I-69 South through Lufkin and Livingston into north Houston, with a typical door-to-door drive time of 3 hours to 3 hours 45 minutes depending on traffic on the I-69 / Beltway 8 approach to A. This route takes you past charming towns and bustling communities, providing a glimpse into the diverse landscape of Texas.

The S → A Route: What to Expect
S, Texas sits in Shelby County right against the Louisiana border, and the run to our team Bush Intercontinental in Houston is one of the longer East Texas airport rides we operate — about 165 to 175 road miles and a typical 3 hour to 3 hour 45 minute door-to-curb drive. The fastest line for almost every S pickup is US-96 South through Tenaha, San Augustine, and Jasper, picking up US-59 / I-69 South at Lufkin and running it straight into north Houston, then north and east on Beltway 8 / Sam Houston Tollway to the A terminal entrances. We pre-pay the Beltway 8 toll so you don’t need a TollTag, and we track your flight tail number in real time so the driver leaves S with the right buffer — never too early, never too late.
The corridor itself is almost entirely four-lane US highway through the East Texas Piney Woods. Lufkin (roughly the midpoint) is the natural rest stop if you need one. Inside the Houston metro the only consistent slow zone is the US-59 / I-69 stretch from Humble down through Greenspoint during weekday afternoon peak (3:30–7:00 PM); for evening S departures we’ll add a 20–30 minute buffer to clear that window.
S, Tenaha & Shelby County Pickup Zone
True door-to-door pickup means we come to your actual home, office, hotel, or business — no park-and-ride lots, no transfers. Our S pickup zone covers the city of S itself (including the historic Shelby County Courthouse square, the Texas 7 / Texas 87 corridor, Hurst Street, and the Loop 500 belt), Tenaha and Joaquin along US-96, Timpson, Garrison, Shelbyville, Huxley, and Patroon. We also pick up from area workplaces (Tyson Foods S plant, Pilgrim’s and other poultry-industry facilities, the S Memorial Hospital district), the airpark / S Municipal Airport (F17) for connecting passengers, and Shelbyville-area lake addresses around Toledo Bend Reservoir. Which A Terminal Should I Choose?
our team Bush Intercontinental (A) has five terminals (A, B, C, D, E). Your terminal is determined by your airline:
- Terminal A — United Airlines (select domestic), Frontier, Spirit, and most regional/leisure carriers.
- Terminal B — United Express regional flights (the smaller two-class regional jets).
- Terminal C — United Airlines mainline domestic (the largest United operation at A; most United mainline domestic departs from C North and C South).
- Terminal D — International carriers: Air France, British Airways, Emirates, KLM, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Qatar, EVA, ANA, Singapore, Aeromexico, Volaris, and others. Transatlantic, Asia, and Gulf flights are almost always Terminal D.
- Terminal E — United international (Latin America, Europe, Asia) plus select partner international operations.

Travel-Day Timing Tips for A
- Security wait times. A posts live TSA wait times on the official Houston Airport System site. Terminal C and Terminal E security run the longest at peak; Terminal A is usually the fastest. Plan 30–45 minutes for security without PreCheck, 10–15 with PreCheck or CLEAR.
- Skyway / TerminaLink. Once airside, A’s Skyway train and the TerminaLink underground train connect every terminal in 5–10 minutes. If you mis-clear at the wrong terminal it’s not a disaster — but starting at the right one saves 15+ minutes.
- International connections. If your itinerary has you arriving at Terminal D or E from overseas and connecting domestic, plan a minimum 90-minute layover. CBP / immigration at A can be slow during the morning European-arrival bank (roughly 7–10 AM).
- Peak weeks. Thanksgiving week, the last 10 days of December, spring break (mid-March), and Memorial Day weekend all run 1.5–2x normal volume at A. Add 30 minutes to your arrival buffer and book your S pickup 48–72 hours ahead during these weeks.
- Weather days. Gulf Coast thunderstorms and the rare ice event can ground-stop A. If your flight is delayed inbound to A, we automatically reshift your S return pickup (we track tail numbers, not just scheduled times). For S departures during a winter weather advisory along US-96 / US-59, we’ll reach out to discuss a safer pickup window or rebook to a same-day-later slot at no charge.
- Cell-phone waiting lot. If a family member is meeting you at A, send them to the official cell-phone lot off JFK Boulevard — not the terminal curb. Houston curbside enforcement is strict and a $75–$150 ticket for circling is common.
