The driving distance from S to A Airport (HOU) ranges from about 40 miles for mid-island pickups (ZIP 77551) to 50–52 miles from the west end of the island (Jamaica Beach, ZIP 77554), with door-to-door drive time of roughly 55–65 minutes off-peak and up to 70–80 minutes during Houston PM rush or summer beach-traffic weekends on I-45 N. S pickup zones we serve
We pick up anywhere on S Island and the surrounding mainland, with the strongest volume in three ZIP codes:
- ZIP 77550 (east-end downtown & the cruise port) — by far our biggest pickup zone. Constant traffic from 2502 Harborside Drive (Carnival cruise terminal), 1602 Harborside and 1402 Harborside (Royal Caribbean / Disney terminals), the Pier 21 / Strand district, and Seawall Boulevard hotels including The San our team Resort, Hotel Galvez & Spa, and the Holiday Inn Resort Galveston-on the Beach.
- ZIP 77551 (mid-island residential and the medical district) — UTMB Health staff and visitors, Sealy / Avenue Q neighborhoods, and the mid-Seawall hotel strip.
- ZIP 77554 (west end — Pirates Beach, Jamaica Beach, Spanish Grant) — beach-house rentals and condos along Termini-San our team Pass Road. Pickups out here add 10–15 minutes and 10 miles versus a downtown S pickup, but the flat door-to-door rate covers it.
- Mainland pickups from Bacliff, Bayou Vista, La Marque, and Texas City are quoted at the same flat door-to-door rate, often at slightly lower fares because they skip the causeway leg.
The route: I-45 North over the causeway, then Beltway 8 East
The default Galveston-to-Hobby route runs I-45 North across the S Causeway (2.2 mi over S Bay), through La Marque, Texas City, Dickinson, and League City, then we exit either at Beltway 8 East (Sam Houston Tollway) to Almeda Genoa Road and Airport Boulevard for the cleanest A approach, or stay I-45 N to Telephone Road / Airport Blvd when Beltway 8 is backed up. The causeway itself is the predictable choke point — on summer Sundays returning from the beach it can add 15–25 minutes — so for tight afternoon flights we pad the pickup window. There is no toll-free alternate that skips the causeway; the only mainland workaround is via SH-146 N through the Texas City refinery corridor, which we use occasionally when I-45 N stacks up beyond Dickinson.
A Airport (HOU) vs Bush Intercontinental (IAH)
A is Houston's south-side airport — a single terminal with concourses A, B, and E (international), located at 7800 Airport Boulevard. It is Southwest Airlines' Houston hub, so if you are returning home on Southwest, your flight almost certainly leaves from HOU. Other carriers at A: Delta, JetBlue, Frontier, and a limited American Airlines presence. IAH (our team Bush Intercontinental) sits 35–40 minutes farther north and runs no Southwest service at all — so the Galveston-to-airport choice is usually decided by which carrier you booked. If you are flying Southwest after a cruise, A is correct; if you are on United or any international long-haul, you likely want our S to IAH shuttle instead.
Cruise-port pickups: timing and luggage
What it costs and how vehicle size affects price
- Sedan (1–3 passengers): $80–$200 door-to-door, averaging around $110. The lower end is mid-island residential; the upper end is west-end Jamaica Beach or a cruise-terminal pickup with extra luggage.
- Large SUV (4–7 passengers): $96–$309, averaging around $175. Right-sized for families or small groups with cruise luggage.
- Shuttle (8–17 passengers): $180–$745, averaging around $350. Used for cruise groups, family reunions, and wedding parties moving together.
Travel tips for Galveston-to-Hobby
- Pad for the causeway. On summer Sundays and major cruise debarkation mornings, add 15–25 minutes to your pickup window. We do this automatically when our dispatcher sees a known-busy day; you do not need to ask.
- Aim for a midday or afternoon Southwest flight when flying home from a cruise. A 7 AM cruise debarkation rarely makes a 10 AM HOU flight cleanly; 12:30 PM or later is the safe call.
