Distance, Drive Time, and the Center → Houston Corridor

How far is Center, TX from Houston, and how long is the drive?

Center is the seat of Shelby County in deep East Texas, sitting on US-96 about 10 miles west of the Sabine River and the Louisiana state line. The driving distances are a meaningful trip — this is not a quick metro hop:

  • Center to IAH (George Bush Intercontinental) — roughly 160–165 miles, door-to-curbside 3 hours to 3 hours 45 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. IAH is the right airport for nearly all international flights and most major-carrier domestic departures.
  • Center to HOU (Hobby) — roughly 180–190 miles, door-to-door 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 15 minutes. Hobby is on the south side of Houston — Southwest’s primary Houston hub plus some Delta, JetBlue, and Frontier service.
  • Center to downtown Houston / Texas Medical Center — roughly 170–180 miles, depending on the exact address inside the loop.

The Routing We Run — US-96 South to US-59 / I-69

From Center, the practical and fastest path into Houston is:

  • US-96 South out of Center (through San Augustine, Pineland, Jasper) —
  • Onto US-59 / I-69 South at Lufkin or Livingston (depending on the stretch) —
  • Through Cleveland, New Caney, and Kingwood into the Houston metro —
  • Then Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Tollway) west to IAH, or I-69 (Eastex Freeway) South to I-45 / Loop 610 for Hobby, downtown, or the Medical Center.

For most trips we stay on US-59 / I-69 the whole way and let live traffic decide whether we exit at Will Clayton Pkwy for IAH or continue south. The previous Center→Houston description on this page mentioned I-45 / Beltway 8 as the main corridor — that’s the wrong axis for East Texas. I-45 is the Dallas–Galveston route; Center sits well east of it.

Pickup Areas in Center and Shelby County

Where in Center do you pick up?

Everywhere — we are a true door-to-door service. There is no central meet point and no requirement to drive to a park-and-ride. Common pickup areas:

  • City of Center (ZIP 75935) — the historic Shelby County courthouse square, residential streets between Pecan and San Augustine, and the commercial corridor along US-96 / Tenaha Street.
  • South Center and Center Industrial Park — addresses along Hurst Street, Loop 500, and the FM-2026 / FM-417 corridor.
  • Pinkston Lake area — including lakeside homes and the rural addresses along FM-2697.
  • Shelby County neighbors — we serve Tenaha (US-59/US-84 junction, ~15 mi north), Timpson (~16 mi northwest), Joaquin (~12 mi east), Shelbyville (~12 mi south), and San Augustine (~28 mi southwest on US-96) on the same routing.
  • Hotels and short-term rentals — we pick up at the Holiday Inn Express Center, Best Western Center Inn, and the Airbnb / VRBO rentals around Pinkston Lake and the Toledo Bend Reservoir. Tell us the property name and we’ll meet you under the porte cochere or at the gate.

Tell us your exact street address when you book and the driver will meet you at the curb at your scheduled pickup time. For rural Shelby County or lakeside pickups, leave a gate code or landmark in the booking comments and we’ll route accordingly.

Houston Drop-Off — IAH Terminal Routing

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) has five active terminals (A, B, C, D, E). Each has its own departures-level curb. Tell us your flight number when you book and we route to the correct terminal automatically — no need to look it up yourself:

  • Terminal A — United Express regional and select United domestic
  • Terminal B — United Express regional (additional)
  • Terminal C — United Airlines (the bulk of mainline United domestic departures)
  • Terminal D — international departures (Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways, Emirates, ANA, Singapore, Turkish, and most foreign-flag carriers)
  • Terminal E — United international (Latin America, Europe), plus select other long-haul

For Hobby (HOU) we drop at the single departures curb on Broadway Street — one terminal, no terminal-routing complexity.

Travel Tips for Center → Houston

  • For early morning IAH departures, the US-59 / I-69 southbound stretch through Kingwood and the North Belt is generally clear before 6 a.m. We build your pickup time around your check-in window with traffic margin already factored in.
  • For Terminal D international departures, we default to a 3-hour pre-departure pickup so you have margin at international check-in, security, and immigration. Tell us if your airline asks for a different cut-off.
  • For 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. inbound rides (Houston → Center), expect 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours during peak northbound on US-59 / I-69, especially Friday afternoons. We factor that into your return ETA.
  • For Toledo Bend / Sabine Parish weekenders flying out of Houston, we run Center pickups on Friday mornings and Sunday-night returns regularly — book in advance for those peak windows.
  • For Houston Texans, Astros, or Rockets game-day trips downtown, allow extra buffer at the I-69 / I-45 / 610 interchange near NRG and downtown — we’ll suggest a window.
  • Flight delays — if your inbound flight is delayed or rerouted, your pickup adjusts automatically. You don’t need to call. Text or call the dispatcher number on your confirmation when you have your bags and we’ll meet you curbside.
  • Pets, kids, oversized luggage, golf clubs — tell us when you book and we’ll send the right size vehicle (1–3 passengers gets a car; 4+ gets a shuttle or SUV).
