Paris, Texas: more than a name
Paris is known for its 65-foot Eiffel Tower replica, built in 1993 by a local welders' union at the Love Civic Center. It is the only Eiffel Tower topped with a red cowboy hat, added in the late 1990s after Las Vegas built a taller replica. The tower carries 27 LED lights that cycle colors for holidays and celebrations.
Next door stands the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial. Trail de Paris offers a scale-model solar system along the path, a different kind of local landmark.
Evergreen Cemetery holds the "Jesus in cowboy boots" statue over the Willet Babcock grave. The Sam Bell Maxey House is a state historic site. Texas A&M University-Commerce is about 20 minutes away.
Waypoints on the run east: Greenville, Sulphur Springs, Mount Pleasant
Greenville sits 51 miles from Dallas and is where the run to Paris leaves the interstate for the final stretch.
Sulphur Springs, 81 miles out, is famous for the one-way-mirrored glass public restrooms in Celebration Plaza beside the 1890s Romanesque Revival Hopkins County Courthouse. The Southwest Dairy Museum has a mechanical milking cow and a soda fountain; Hopkins County was once the South's leading milk producer, the Dairy Capital of Texas. Cooper Lake State Park is nearby.
Mount Pleasant, 118 miles out, is the Titus County seat on I-30.
Texarkana: two states, one stop
The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse at 500 State Line Avenue was built 1932-33 with a pink-granite Texas base and Arkansas limestone walls. It is the only U.S. post office that sits in two states, Texas zip 75501 and Arkansas zip 71854. Locals call it the second-most-photographed courthouse in the country.
The Perot Theatre opened in 1924 as the Saenger and was restored by Texarkana native Ross Perot. The Ace of Clubs House, from 1885, was supposedly built with poker winnings and has a club-shaped floor plan. Wright Patman Lake is a 20,000-acre reservoir, and the 1894 City Market shops hold a monthly Second Saturday Trade Days.
Which airport for northeast Texas
| Leg | Road distance | Routed drive time |
|---|---|---|
| DFW Airport to Paris | 114 miles | about 2.2 hours (133 minutes) |
| Love Field to Paris | 111 miles | about 2.1 hours (129 minutes) |
DFW Airport to Paris is 114 miles / 133 minutes, and Love Field to Paris is 111 miles / 129 minutes — a near tie, so flight schedules and fares should decide.
Both airports sit west of the city, so the airport leg adds little beyond the 105-mile run itself.
