Palestine: dogwoods and railroads
Palestine is the official Dogwood Trails Capital of Texas, designated by the Texas Legislature in May 2023. The Texas Dogwood Trails Celebration has run since 1938 and lands on the last two weekends of March and the first weekend of April. The celebration is centered on Davey Dogwood Park, with 5.5-mile trolley tours from the Visitor Center.
The Texas State Railroad runs on an 1883 line with four-hour round-trip Piney Woods excursions between Palestine and Rusk. The trip includes a layover at the Rusk depot. The railroad also adds Polar Express rides in November and December.
The Railroad Heritage Center has a large HO-scale model railroad. Palestine claims more than 1,800 recognized historic resources and more National Register buildings than any Texas city except Galveston. The Anderson County Courthouse dates to 1914, and the Hot Pepper Festival comes each October.
Athens: burgers, black-eyed peas and big bass
Athens proclaims itself the Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World and the birthplace of the hamburger. Fletcher “Uncle Fletch” Davis, an Athens resident, is credited with creating the first hamburger. His legacy is celebrated at the Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree and Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival each September.
The Edwin L. Cox Jr. Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center opened in November 1996 near Lake Athens. It runs the Toyota ShareLunker program and is known as the Big Bass Capital of the World. The center features aquariums and fishing ponds and is open Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
The East Texas Arboretum and the historic Texan Theater round out downtown Athens.
Canton: First Monday, all weekend
First Monday Trade Days runs Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month. Vendors and promoters bill it as the largest and oldest continually operated outdoor flea market in the United States. The event has roughly 5,000 vendor spaces across about 450 acres and can draw up to 100,000 shoppers on a big weekend.
First Monday grew out of 1850s frontier court days. The shopping weekend happens before Monday, which surprises first-timers.

Scheduled bus service is thin: intercity operators run a single mid-afternoon Palestine-to-Dallas departure, and nothing meaningful serves Athens or Canton. Distances run 62 to 199 miles depending on the leg, which is too long to bike and too scattered for transit.
