Lady Bird Lake, a Colorado River reservoir, is nestled in stark contrast to the cosmopolitan buildings that surround it. It was originally named 'Town Lake' and was built in 1960 to serve as a cooling pond for a power plant. When the plant was decommissioned in 2007, the lake was renamed Lady Bird Lake. Its glassy waters are now a recreational haven. Lady Bird Lake is surrounded by emerald groves, winding trails, Zilker Park, and the revitalizing Barton Springs. The Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail (formerly known as Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail) follow the Colorado River from the Tom Miller Dam on the west to the Longhorn Dam on the east. The 10.1-mile trail is one of the most popular in Austin. It is ideal for a variety of outdoor activities, such as walking, jogging, biking, and water kayaking.
Along the mostly crushed granite trail, people of all athletic abilities mix peacefully. Only 2.5% of the trail has more than an 8% grade, making it easy for beginners but challenging for experienced runners. Along the trail, there are numerous access points and bridges, including the famous Congress Avenue Bridge, which is home to the Congress Bridge Bats. This allows you to easily change the length of your run and get a different perspective by going around Town Lake or starting from a different location. Be aware that the trail splits, connecting via city sidewalks on either side of IH 35 on the south shore of Town Lake.
There are several mile markers along the trail. Between the South 1st Bridge and the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue is the 0-mile marker. In addition to these mile markers, there are numerous Austin attractions located along and near the Town Lake trail. Zilker Park, Capital Cruises, Kayak Rentals, and Bat Watching Tours, Austin Rowing Dock, Auditorium Shores, Austin High School (with tennis courts), Eilers Park, Downtown YMCA, and Festival Beach are just a few examples. The trail also connects to numerous other hiking and biking trails to the north and south of Town Lake.
